A lot of bird in a tiny package
Because obviously we don’t have enough going on in our little homestead, we have added quail! Although I had researched quail and thought they would be a neat addition I wasn’t really sure where to start in getting quail so I didn’t pursue it. Then we received a couple of dozen of hatching quail eggs as part of a bunny trade and found ourselves with quail practically dropped into our lap! Amazingly enough it was a week after we received an incubator for a gift!
I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. Nor do I like to question Providence. So, I immediately started doing my research and getting prepared. You don’t have long between popping them in the incubator and having quail running around, that’s for sure!
Coturnix quail are prolific layers, with hens averaging over 300 eggs per year. They have a great food to egg ration. Even more impressive is they start laying at 8 weeks. And at a year old when their laying begins to slack off some they are still a healthy and robust bird that is worth butchering and eating. Unlike chickens. With Coturnix quail they are butchering size by 12 weeks old. Due to their small size they require much less space than chickens and they aren’t as noisy. They’re pretty impressive!
Even looking at the small eggs I was completely unprepared for how teeny tiny the quail chicks were when they hatched. They are beyond adorable and I cannot wait to see them grow!
This spring we will have quail eggs for sale by the dozen. We will also have hatching eggs available and chicks by summer of 2021. Please let me know if you’re interested or want more information about these amazing birds!
